The SAOSWF was the host of a well attended CPD presentation by Alta Bence on Communication with Children at different ages and stages

Childhood Cancer: Sharing information with Children at different ages and stages.

The SAOSWF hosted a CPD presentation last week attended by 37 members. The presenter was Alta Bence, a medical social worker at CHOC - Childhood Cancer Foundation S A. For the past 28 years Alta has specialised in the field of childhood cancer. She currently leads the CHOC Psychosocial Team of 17 social and social auxiliary workers who are based in paediatric oncology units across South Africa. They provide much needed psychosocial care to children diagnosed with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders, and to their families, walking the journey with them from the time of diagnosis until the end of treatment, whether cure, or sadly, end-of-life palliative care and bereavement support. Alta is passionate about growing and mentoring her team and training in the field of the psychosocial impact of illness and hospitalisation on a child and family, loss, death and dying.
